I Purchased A Duplicator 4S

This is a Wanhao Duplicator 4S!

I bought this on Cyber Monday 2014. I'm currently waiting for it to come in the mail with a lot of other goodies and filaments!

I've done research here and there for years out of interest in 3D printers but in the past couple of months I've done hardcore research because I wanted to finally get one of my own. My goal was to find the best bang for my buck. Obviously, this is the product I came up with.

Here's the lowdown (things I found important):

  • Dual extruders
    • print two colors in a print
    • print two different types of material in a print
    • if one goes bad you can still print while you're working out the issues
  • All metal frame (this sets it apart from the similar Duplicator 4X)
    • gives it stability so that prints come out cleaner
    • stays in calibration longer and can withstand transportation
  • Has safety panels and detachable hood
    • this is good when you need a closed off area for printing certain materials
    • it helps keep the printing area and components clean and dust free
  • 250 x 145 x 150 mm (~ 8.9 x 5.7 x 5.9 in) build area
    • this is not the largest building envelope on the market but is is considerably large
    • slightly smaller than the MakerBot Replicator 2x build area
  • Heated Build Plate
    • allows use of a wide array of different filaments
    • helps reduce the print from warping and peeling-up off the plate
  • Precision and resolution
    • same resolution as the MakerBot Replicator 2x
    • position is ever so slightly better in the Replicator 2x
  • PRICE
    • you get all these things that are in higher quality printers for a much more affordable price
    • currently about $1500 cheaper than the Replicator 2x

I bought the Duplicator 4S for $1080 from makergeeks.com but I had a 10% discount for Cyber Monday. Right now it is on sale on the site for $990. Along with getting free shipping within the US and two free 1kg filament rolls, the extruders also come updated to the MK9+ (custom Maker Geeks design) extruders opposed to the MK9 that comes in the printer originally. This modification has a new roller system in it so that filaments such as NinjaFlex (high elasticity) can be printed with no troubles. Plus it is said to not get clogged and such as much. Buying the upgraded dual extruders separately is $190.

The printer along with free shipping and 2 rolls of filament from the Wanhao site is $990 (which is still a phenomenal price for this machine). Although, it does not include this upgraded extrusion system. To me, it was important to have the capability for various materials so I chose to buy from Maker Geeks to have the upgrade pre-installed.

If the printer was bought from Maker Geeks right now it would be like getting the upgraded extrusion system for free!

I will post more in the future and especially when I get to printing (way too excited about this).
